A Guide You Won’t Want to Lose When Evaluating IT Recruiters

Not all IT recruiters are created equal, and not every recruiter will be able to help you land a great gig in the IT industry. It’s a highly competitive job market, and even though there is a general war on for great talent, some staffing agencies simply focus on a different type of staff fulfillment or a different pay grade than is what you are looking for. Here are three things to think seriously about when evaluating your options when it comes to IT recruiters.

1. Do they have experience in what you want to find a job in?

Staffing is a niche industry. There are IT staffing agencies and there are creative staffing agencies, construction and retail. In fact, for every industry that exists, there is a staffing company who is working hard to build their expertise to match. The trick is finding the one who is the best fit for you and your career. Looking to get into IT security, or to build your skills in database management? Make sure you find an agency who understands what you’re looking for from your next job and one that has experience in that area as well.

2. Are they listening to you or just trying to place you in a job and collect a fee from the employer?

Employers know that their success depends on the people they hire. That’s why so much time and resources are invested in identifying, recruiting and retaining the rock star IT professionals who will make a difference for their business. But some recruiters are not as fully invested in the candidate’s success as they should be. When evaluating an IT recruiter, make sure they are listening to you and really working to help you find the right opportunity for you, not just whatever helps them bill a client. The best way to evaluate this is by your gut instinct, so spend time talking about your goals and experience and see whether the recruiter can align their recommendations with your expectations. If they are a little too far off the mark, consider moving on to someone who you know has your back.

3. Are you getting the benefits/salary you require?

While there will always be limitations in terms of salary and benefits, only you can judge what does and doesn’t meet your needs and expectations. If a recruiter is pigeon-holing you in a pay grade that is too far off the mark, or worse yet trying to talk you into believing that you are only worth a certain amount in the industry when you know that not to be the case, it’s time to move on. There are a wide range of rates and benefit packages available, so you should make sure that you find a company that aligns with your requirements.

In the end, you need to ask, what does your gut say? Can you trust them? Do you enjoy working with them? If so, chances are that you’ll have a good experience with the recruiter. If not, find someone who you see working with for the long term.
