The IT field has never seen such a high demand for experienced and educated professionals. There is such a high level of competition among employers that it’s surprising to hear that IT hiring managers are still not finding the candidates they are looking for. While software engineers are experiencing some of the highest demand in the job market today, employers are still desperate to identify the candidates with the right skills to help them meet their needs. As an IT candidate, you may have experienced this in the job market. If you are feeling frustration at not finding the right opportunity, perhaps it’s because you don’t know what it is that IT hiring managers are really looking for. Read this article to learn about major pain points for IT employers and how you can address them to land your next big job.

The Hiring Game

As a candidate in the IT field, you’ve probably heard that there’s a “war” on for IT talent. That might not be the best way to characterize the demand. Employers are certainly feeling the crunch and looking desperately for the best candidates who can deliver on their skills and qualifications. But it’s less of a war and more of a game of hide and seek. IT hiring managers are faced with the very real challenge of identifying and recruiting their ideal candidates. This may be due, at least in part, to a significant gap between their expressed recruitment goals and the actual skills and capabilities of employees and applicants. In a recent survey of the market, the vast majority of IT leaders stated that they found it either challenging or very challenging to find excellent IT talent. Then they said that is was more challenging to attract the talent they want to invest in than it was as little as three years ago. The hiring game has changed, as have the needs of employers. Striking the right balance between the needs of employers and the capabilities of candidates has clearly become more difficult in recent years.

What Hiring Managers Are Looking For

Part of the reason that employers are having difficulty hiring their target employees is the range of technical experience and skills which they are currently looking for. The most in demand of these skills is project management. These skills are considered essential to the success of the hiring company. Hiring managers are also searching for professionals with experience in application development, networking, database management and development, cyber security, cloud computing, and mobile software development. A key element that all these highly sought after skill sets share is their novelty to the IT market. Application development and cloud computing are very much in demand because they are new technologies, and finding the professionals with the experience in these platforms is difficult simply because there are not too many employees with that level of experience yet.

Soft skills such as collaborative orientation, creativity, leadership, and customer focus are also in high demand. Finding the candidates with the right combination of these leadership traits and the aforementioned technical experience is tough. But if candidates can show their ability to balance the two high-priority skills in their applications, employers will be jumping at the opportunity to bring them on board.
