It is clear that in our new digital economy, the skills and education of job candidates are what can help them get ahead. But in your journey to building your career in the energy and IT industries, how do you know which certificates and what training will lead to the best opportunities? The answer is that there are many, and depending on your field and area of interest, finding the right one can be the challenge.

Here are just a few that can help focus your efforts and differentiate your resume from other candidates in the talent pool.

Project Management Certification

IT needs strong project managers, and there are many different programs to get you there. The PMI Project Management Professional (PMP) Program Management Professional (PgMP), Certified Cyber Forensics Professional (CCFP), Certified Forensic Computer Examiner (CRCE), GIAC Secure Software Programmer-Java (GSSP-JAVA), and Six Sigma Master Black Belt certifications are all well-regarded programs that can result in significant increases in salary.

Security Certifications

Cybersecurity has quickly become a necessary line item for all businesses working in the modern world. Because of that investment, companies are looking for the talent that will help protect them from the dangers cybercrime. More businesses are looking to expand their security offerings and internal processes, and in turn, that is driving up the value of security certifications.

The three security certifications that employers are most keen to hire talent with include:

  • GIAC Enterprise Defender (GCED)
  • GIAC Certified Firewall Analyst (GCFW)
  • EC-Council Certified Security Analyst (ECSA)

According to a survey done by Foote Partners LLC, employers are willing to boost pay for these certifications by up to 50 percent of their previous offerings in the past year alone.

Up-to-Date CRM Training

Customer Relationship Management (CRM) has become an important part of doing business. If you are at all client facing, you need to be using CRM technology to track and nurture sales leads. Software programs like Salesforce and Microsoft Dynamics are helping businesses grow fast. The recent news of the integration of LinkedIn data to Microsoft Dynamics means that if you’re not using customer data to drive business decisions, you’re likely falling behind the competition. If you’re not up to date on the latest tech, look into specific training for the programs you are most likely to use (both Salesforce and Microsoft offer free training on their software programs).

General IT Certifications

General IT certificates such as the Linux Professional Institute certification (LPIC-Level 3), the EC-Council Computer Hacking Forensic Investigator (CHFI) certification, the CompTIA Server+ certification, and the Microsoft Certified Professional Developer certification have shown to increase the value of an employee to an employer. As an IT professional, it’s worth having at least one certification to show your level of expertise in the industry. This makes you more desirable to employers and makes you more capable to make a substantive impact on the industry as well.
